Hilshire Village

Hilshire village

Located 2 miles west of the 610 Loop and just north of I-10 off of Wirt Road, Hilshire Village is the smallest of the 6 Memorial Villages–the city’s total area is only .3 square miles! Because of its wooded character and quiet, winding streets, Hilshire Village retains the rural-suburban, almost country feel that characterizes much of the Memorial area. But the good news is that residents aren’t sacrificing convenience for this character: Hilshire Village is located only a stone’s throw from major employment centers and Houston’s finest shopping destinations.

THE HISTORY:

Founder and developer Frank Bruess, a Missouri native, came to Texas and purchased 30 acres of what would eventually become Hilshire Village. The name comes from Hillshire, England, which Bruess read about and hoped to emulate. Construction began in the early 1950s.

After attempts to form a larger Spring Branch municipality failed, Hilshire Village became an independent municipality in 1955, as Houston annexed the surrounding areas. As of the 2010 census, its population was only 746!
