Located 2 miles west of the 610 Loop and just north of I-10 off of Wirt Road, Hilshire Village is the smallest of the 6 Memorial Villages–the city’s total area is only .3 square miles! Because of its wooded character and quiet, winding streets, Hilshire Village retains the rural-suburban, almost country feel that characterizes much of the Memorial area. But the good news is that residents aren’t sacrificing convenience for this character: Hilshire Village is located only a stone’s throw from major employment centers and Houston’s finest shopping destinations.
Founder and developer Frank Bruess, a Missouri native, came to Texas and purchased 30 acres of what would eventually become Hilshire Village. The name comes from Hillshire, England, which Bruess read about and hoped to emulate. Construction began in the early 1950s.
After attempts to form a larger Spring Branch municipality failed, Hilshire Village became an independent municipality in 1955, as Houston annexed the surrounding areas. As of the 2010 census, its population was only 746!
Fire protection is provided by The Village Fire Department, located at 901 Corbindale in Hedwig Village, and serves all 6 Memorial Villages.
Police protection is provided by the Spring Valley Police Department, located at 1025 Campbell Road in neighboring Spring Valley.
The United States Postal Service designates all Hilshire Village addresses as “Houston” and Hilshire Village has no post office of its own. Postal services are provided by the Long Point Post Office, located at 8000 Long Point Road.
The city itself Residents enjoy easy access to the best shopping Houston has to offer, with both the Galleria/Uptown, and Memorial City/City Centre each only a few miles away. These areas are also home to some of the best and most unique dining options Houston has to offer, such as City Centre’s RA Sushi, or Uptown’s Maggiano’s Little Italy.
Hilshire Village is located in the Spring Branch Independent School District. Elementary-aged students are zoned to attend Valley Oaks Elementary School, just down the street from the city’s edge.
Middle school-aged students are zoned to attend Spring Branch Middle School and high school-aged students are zoned to attend the renowned Memorial High School, both located in nearby Hedwig Village.
School of the Woods Montessori is located within the city limits, and other nearby private options include Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, as well as Awty International School, The Kincaid School, and The Regis School.
The Spring Branch Memorial Library, operated by the Harris County Public Library system, is located in nearby Hedwig Village, at 930 Corbindale Road.
Houston’s Memorial Park is located only a few minutes east of Hilshire Village, along the Katy Freeway, and boasts such amenities as a golf course, tennis courts, sports fields, and a 3 mile running trail.
