Rice Military is a rapidly developing, vibrant neighborhood near the center of Houston. It is convenient to Downtown, Uptown/The Galleria and other major employment areas, and enjoys easy access to I-10 and the 610 Loop, as well as other major freeways.
Rice Military is bound by Memorial Drive to the south, Westcott Street to the west, Washington Avenue to the north, and Shepherd Drive to the east. The diverse neighborhood features a variety of home types, including single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums, for a variety of budgets.
Rice Military derives its name from the military training camp that was once adjacent to the area. In the early 1900s, Camp Logan became a major training center for soldiers training to fight in World War I. The camp was very convenient to Houston and sat at an important rail junction. Camp Logan later hosted a military hospital, and Houston’s first golf course, now within Memorial Park, was created for recovering soldiers. The Hogg family purchased this land and donated most of it; this portion became Memorial Park.
The land that became Rice Military was purchased from the Rice family and developed by Bankers Trust Co. In the 1990s, a revitalization of the deteriorating area began, as artists and young professionals began moving to, and gentrifying, the area. Many of the original blue collar cottages and bungalows have been replaced by townhomes, and current residents enjoy their great location with its proximity to the Washington corridor, Downtown, Memorial Park and other amenities.
